Whether you are the owner-practitioner, a partner in a group practice or employed in a chiropractic office as a treating chiropractor, you fundamentally only have two primary responsibilities:
1. Give the patient direction.
2. Hold the patient accountable.
Naturally, you need a license to practice in the state in which you have an office, which confirms that you have the proper education, skills and expertise to employ your healing art to provide care to patients under the scope of your license. That is a basic requirement.
And, for the purpose of this article, we are only addressing the issue of delivering care to a patient, not any other role you may have in the administration and leadership of the practice. Those are topics for a different article.
Give Direction
As a chiropractor, you must determine the cause of the patient’s complaint and then recommend a program of care to achieve the desired outcome. During your consultation with the patient, you may review x-rays and the results from your examination and then you will make your recommendations. You will give the patient a direction on how to achieve optimum wellness.
You must be ethical, honest, honorable and have certainty at this stage. You must tell the patient what they need to hear, not what the patient wants to hear.
Most patients don’t want to be a patient. The word brands them as someone with a health problem. And, given a choice, they would prefer one adjustment and it should be delivered to their mailbox.
The reality is that most patients will require a series of adjustments and other ancillary support therapies to achieve optimum outcome and wellness.
You must deliver the communication effectively and with certainty if you are to help the patient achieve the results they desire.
Hold Accountable
Once the patient has accepted your program of care, your recommendations, you must hold the patient accountable and not allow them to discontinue care until released by you.
Many patients will discontinue care when they begin to feel better, believing that the problem has been corrected and they no longer need to report to the office for additional treatment.
When this happens, it is your responsibility as the treating doctor to prevent this decision. You can accomplish this with a structured and consistent program of patient education on each and every visit to ensure they understand that pain is a poor measurement of health.
The absence of pain does not mean the optimization of wellness. It is a process, and it is the doctor’s responsibility to hold the patient accountable to the program of care recommendations.
Only the doctor can release the patient from further care. Not the Receptionist. Not the therapist. Not the collection person. Only the doctor has the appropriate license and authority to release a patient from care. Period.
Maintenance
When a patient is released from their care, the doctor can make additional recommendations for maintenance and/or wellness care.
When you understand your role as the doctor, you can provide the standards of care that represent your philosophy. You should not be distracted by operational aspects of the practice, when you are treating patients. That’s a different “hat” to wear and never should they cross paths.
Peak your practice with your role as the attending doctor.
